Newcomers confusion on text editing
« on: June 12, 2017, 09:49:37 PM »
Hello, this is my first time making a post and one thing confuses me. How does one go about editing the dialogue of final fantasy 5? I see plenty of other images and one heck of a humorous ff5 spoof hack change text in success, I have been looking around online to no avail. Could anyone possibly help me know how one goes about editing ff5 dialogue? I have plans for making quite a ff5 hack and text changes are a must, but I try and cannot locate how to do so, even with various hex editors I've tried and got nothing....

There's a straight up text editor for FF5 that should get done what you need.

Hey ScarabEnigma, welcome to slick ^_^

As far as I know you are right, there is no FF5 text editing tool, except the one that samurai goroh pointed.
Just in case you miss the link, here is direct link

P.S. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, there are plenty of good and knowledgeable folks around that will try to answer to the best of their abilities!

my google-fu got me at least this:
https://github.com/noisecross/FF5e_Text_Editor

but then I never compiled it myself, so where else could I've gotten it,
ah this is confusing...

You can also use a hex editor like Windhex and load a table file that translates the code into text. Table files can be found in the wiki.

The source was released on github right before last version was ready. The only 2 versions 1.5 and 1.6 I had seen is here on slick - as attachments to a thread. Unfortunately his 2 excellent projects - Text Editor and Map Editor were never added to Wiki so usually people stumble on them by chance or if its been pointed out by somebody :(

I made a quick edit to add those tools to the wiki.
The page still needs to be prettified, but at least the info is there now.

Thank you samurai goroh!
I was thinking to do it myself, but I still hope noisercross will come back and do it himself :)

I made a quick edit to add those tools to the wiki.
Thanks a lot Samurai Goroh.
I didn't did it before because anytime I uploaded a new version, the link to the file changed (obviously!) and at the end I just forgot to add them to the wiki when the last stable versions were released.

Currently both projects are stopped but published on github. Everybody is free to get the code and use it in any way he/she/it want.

How does one go about editing the dialogue of final fantasy 5?
Well... is just like editing dialogues in any other SNES game:
1. You have to look the rom to find the text tables and how text strings are stored.
2. After that, you should develop a tool to extract and insert the text data. Maybe you'll only need an hexeditor as Jorgur pointed out.
3. Maybe you have also to find the font graphics if you need new characters and again, develop a tool to extract and insert graphics...
4. Doing that, you can break the rom, so you'll need a lot of testing.

It's a lot of job... If you want 'only' edit some texts in this game, you can use the editor mentioned in previous posts.

There's an Ancient Cave hack for Final Fantasy V. It implements Lufia 2?s Ancient Cave on top of Final Fantasy V. Can someone make an English Translation of it in terms of text translation?

There's an Ancient Cave hack for Final Fantasy IV.
Did you mean Final Fantasy V?
Can someone make an English Translation of it in terms of text translation?
That's been around for a long time.
