Throwing an idea out there

This is for FF6, mind you. As most of us know, there's 3 bits that will give any item a spell to cast on low HP. Currently there's 3 bits, one for each of Shell, Safe, and Reflect. What I propose, is to utilize the bits a little more, and turn them into a look-up table.

Pros: This will give you 7 spells to choose from.
Cons: No item will ever cast more than 1 spell.

If I were to make this patch, I should be able to do it without taking any free space, since it seems like they wasted a lot here at C2/0A4A. So, is this worth exploring?

Actually, there's no reason you couldn't use it to do multiple conditions at once; the problem would just be arranging the dispatch table to support it. (e.g. using a stop byte to indicate when to stop adding conditions.)

That would reduce the number of spells you have available. I wouldn't be able to do any sign tweaking either, since there's 255 spells to choose from.

One less spell is hardly going to break anything. Even if it were, wouldn't it be possible to have a separate set of effects which just reused spell animations and was entirely separate from the spell list otherwise?

Ok, I see 2 possibilities:
1) You get 1 spell to cast, period.
2) You get up to 7 spells to cast, but it depends on which bits are set in the relic data. Say you have "Wall on low HP" set, you would get 4 spells cast, since it's the highest of the 3 bits. If you had the Safe and Shell checked, you would get 3 spells, etc.
