Adding new dungons and sidequests to FF6?
xibalba:
How doable is this? Anyone want to throw their fantasies out there, of what would be cool?
I've played FF6 so many times that the world map seems kinda empty. I wouldn't mind having more places to go and more stuff to do.
I'd start with a secret passage in the Training Hall, hidden behind a clock that moves when you press a switch. I'm not sure what the theme of the dungeon would be - maybe the sewers of Narshe, or the steamworks or something along those lines, with hidden passages into hidden basements and crawl-spaces of houses. Possibly an underground lake, and hot springs.
A few more towns would be cool too, if they were in hard to reach places. More paths that lead to random places in the mountains, where no one has ever heard of the empire.
The chocobo stables hidden in forests seem to indicate that you can have a portal to a field screen, without having a graphic for a town or dungeon.

Given the current state of the FF6 map editor, it's very doable. The only problem you have is there are no free tilemaps, so you can't actually create anything new. You have to use recycled maps.

No free tilesets, or no free maps?
Lenophis:
There's plenty of unused maps you can use, but you can't make any new map configurations, because all of those are taken up. You need to recycle old ones, or expand them (good luck with that).

This is a pretty big question, but how DO the maps in FF6 work? I've never looked into it, but off the top; of my head it seems some maps contain multiple rooms that can be entered at different points. Or am I waaay off base?
