Discuss Your Favorite RomHacks/Mods/Fangames

(1/1)

DrROBschiz:
Been wanting to make this topic!

I've been literally addicted to all of the awesome remixes, remakes (or completely original) that are created by all the talented gaming enthusiasts across the net.

I figured I would list my favorites in the hope that this topic might bring other hacks to my attention that I might be interested in!

Pandora's Box       Status - In Developmen/Demo               Location - Here Dummy

Of course this one is Obvious. When I found out that people were modding FF6 I immediately started scouring for every single rendition. Even though its still just a demo it remains my favorite for bringing so many changes that it can be considered a remake.

Breath of Fire 2 Retranslation    Status - Complete              Location - http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1384/

Just started this one and HOLY CRAP! The difference in aesthetics and scripting really adds a tremendous boost in the gameplay experience. Its so much easier on the eyes. The only gameplay change is the addition of the B Button Dash which is a nice touch. Those looking for a nice gameplay hack can check out Breath of Fresh Fire @ http://jeffludwig.com/downloads/

Links Awakening remake Status - In development?
Location - http://www.thekartel.com/video-games/17662499-fan-made-zelda-reawakens-links-awakening.html

Just found this one and have yet to try it but i can't wait because it looks awesome. Played on PC. Apparently still has a lot of issues. Likely due to the fact that is was made in RPG Maker.

MegaMan X Corrupted Status - In Development           Location - No Playable Version released

Just listing this one because it excites me on many levels. Been in Development for a long time. I'm hoping for a 2012 release of this one!

These are just of few of the recent examples that have caught my eye. Ill continue to update my findings/opinions in this thread as they pop up! How about you guys?

DrROBschiz:
Symphony of the Night Hacked!
Status - In Development
Location - http://sotnhacked.wordpress.com/

Made a topic about this one before with plenty of skeptical responses... which were totally warranted. Still the ambitious concept and idea behind this one are impressive. This one guy is basically rebuilding the entire game from scratch in Game Maker (as opposed to hacking the original ISO) and has completed a Demo of the Intro Stage.

SOTN is a big game and its very Likely he will not finish this anytime soon if at all.....but I give this guy props anyways and ill continue to follow this one.

Metroid 2 Remake
Status - In development
Lovcation - http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/

A really cool idea! See the thing with me is that i can't bring myself to play games that aren't easy on the eyes. 16bit graphics with robust visuals is basically the bare minimum for me. This guy is basically taking the assets used in the GBA metroids and remaking Metroid 2! I might actually play this game now! Unfortunately, according to his blog he has taken on many responsibilities(being a new father is one) so it is likely that this may be heavily delayed or not completed at all!

:stfu: I don't post here very often anymore.

Played the fully playable Zero MMX3 hack a few months ago and it's great. One of those hacks where you can basically toss the original cartridge, because you won't be touching it ever again. It won't run in bsnes, though, which is a huge disappointment.

DrROBschiz:
Thats a great hack! Ill have to try it out!

There hasn't been much going on in the fan game scene.

Esco has been making continuous progress on the SOTN hack which is probably one of the most exciting ones in Development.

Jay P  of Super Mario Crossover fame has a Kickstarter to great a completely original games within the same premise called Super Retro Squad.  Looks Awesome and already has complete funding!

Lots of Cool stuff always happening at FFhacktics.com!  Always nice to see how continuously strong the FFT community is.

Anything else out there that should be catching my eye?

Dragonsbrethren:
It's not a hack, but pick up the port of Sonic CD off Steam/XBLA/whatever. $5 for an exceptionally good reversed-engineered fan remake, rather than emulation, which (optionally) imports Sonic 2 spindash mechanics and Tails, plus plays in widescreen by expanding the field of view. Tails kind of breaks some of the level design, but who cares? He's a bonus character. Has both the Japanese and US soundtracks (unfortunately you can't mix and match individual tracks, only chose one or the other).

Wish Sega would let him do the rest of the games this way, but they already have emulated versions on the same platforms, so that's really doubtful.

 :edit:

Steam summer sale is going on right now actually, so it's only $3. I might just pick it up; already have it on XBLA, but I know I'd play it more if it was on my Steam account.
