Questions about hacking FFVI - line breaks and graphics.
« on: December 23, 2011, 09:39:53 AM »
So, now that FF3usME has a dialogue editing function, I figured I'd try to outdate ManuLoewe's patch that agonized me so in my youth. However, I want to do a bit more than that and revert the graphics to the Japanese version's, hence the topic.

So my questions to you are these - does FFIII on the SNES have automatic linebreaks for dialogue? It would save a helluva lotta space if it does.

And secondly, how would one go about reverting graphics? I mean including the final battle, the cafe signs and the mute symbol. Lord J's more thorough patch corrupts the battle background used in the cave to South Figaro, so that's no dice. The things I'm probably going to need to change...

- Critic
- Chadarnook (Goddess)
- Barb-e and similar foes
- Goddess
- The "Earth" tier at the final battle (The background that likely corrupted the cave)
- Starlet
- Siren
- Cafe sign
- Mute symbol

I know for sure I'm going to be using assassin17's Sketch bug fix and Yazoo's FFVI title screen as well. I've resolved myself to not make this conform to the rest of the series, but look a bit more like Ted Woolsey was translating from the start rather than replacing the people responsble for the translation of "FFII" halfway to release time.
Hacking is hard.

For menu descriptions, yes, but it's not detected properly, so there will be garbage. More accurately, there is no code to detect when to go to the next line, and it's VRAM that is moving it down on its own, which is why there is garbage.
For battles, same as the above.
For plain old dialogue, yes, and it works fine.

Woolsey had nothing to do with FF4.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

And that's why I didn't say that. Reportedly, whateverthefuck her name is, Kaoru Moriyama or something, she was translating Final Fantasy VI and then whatshisdick saw how it was being translated then they hired Woolsey. That's the major story going around on the Internet, at least, thanks.

Reread my quote a little please.

"[I plan to make it look] like Ted Woolsey was translating from the start rather than replacing the people responsble for the translation of "FFII" halfway to release time."

I'm one of the major people around telling that Moriyama translated IV and not Woolsey. I respect the man goddammit.
