The best and most accurate EMUs?
« on: June 14, 2011, 09:53:27 PM »
I'm looking for the best most accurate NES/Famicom emulator that reproduces the most accurate (sound mostly).

*edit*
Make that the most accurate emulators period for all console systems (besides BSNES)?

Thoughts?

Nintendulator is the best cycle-accurate NES emulator around, but the best performance NES emu that is also accurate is Nestopia. As for SNES, bsnes is the most accurate, hands down, and it's not even close.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

I've already been hugely impressed by BSNES.

I've been using Nestopia lately and it seems to get the job done nicely, I'll try Nintendulator as well.

What about the other consoles?

Genesis: Unknown, but avoid older versions of Gens, cause their sound is terrible.
PS: Emulating this system is still a decade behind. Nothing is accurate.
N64: This is even worse than the PS, and is more than a decade behind.
GB/C/A: Probably one of the VBA forks, but I have no idea. Hasn't been much word on this in a while.
DS: Still pretty new, so it's unfair to expect anything to be that accurate yet. Patience.
PS2: Unknown.
Cube: Unknown.
Saturn: From what I hear, nothing has been worked on in at least 4 years. Unknown what is accurate, if anything.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

Ah, so there's really nothing beyond what I already have then.  Thought maybe there was something I didn't know since I don't really follow emulation much anymore.

Yabause is worked on, though I do not recall the last update. SSF is worked on regularly as well. Just got a new update a few weeks ago, in fact.

Edit: Sorry for not being clear. Those two are Saturn emulators. SSF is the better of the two.

For GB/C, you'll want bgb for accurate emulation.

For Genesis, use Kega Fusion or Regen. For Sega CD and 32x, Kega Fusion. 32x emulation in all emulators is kind of hacky, but KF does it best.

Yeah I was going to recommend Kega Fusion and BGB as well. Fusion isn't on the level of bsnes, but from what I gather it's still a lot more accurate than other Genesis emulators. I kind of forgot about Regen though and haven't been following its development.

There's supposed to be a more accurate GBC emulator than BGB but I've completely forgotten its name. :lame:

If you want an Snes emulator with perfect (yes perfect) sound and don't want it to hog all CPU resources, use Snes9x 1.53. Avoid Zsnes like the plague; Square Enix games sound like a drunk guy trying to compose music and Super Mario World makes your ears bleed.

hah, i'm still using Snes9x 1.39 (and occasionally, some test version of 1.43), which makes ZSNES sound like a pitch-perfect sober maestro.

Okay,  maybe not perfect but it's sure as heck better than Zsnes' abortive SPC emulation.  I can't tell the difference between Bsnes and Snes9x 1.53 as far as SPC700 accuracy goes, so...I avoid Zsnes like the plague. Super Mario World, Final Fantasy 4/5/6 sound like crap. As far as I'm concerned, it sounds like the real deal to me. How is it not perfect?

Perfect example - Chrono Trigger, and all Square Enix games used very strange, unconventional techniques using the SPC700, and until Blaarg wrote a new audio core, many sound effects, tempos, etc sounded nowhere near real snes hardware. Now that both Bsnes and Snes9x use Blaarg's audio core, sounds such as the infamous Lavos scream sound right. Zsnes doesn't have a snowball's chance in Hell. On Zsnes, it sounds like a drunk person singing underwater. http://www.filefactory.com/file/cc20055/n/snes9x153_lavos_scream.mp3  This MP3 was recorded from Snes9x 1.53.

Can't forget this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U18mfbm62I

I can't play SNES9X because the latest version makes Secret of Mana's mode 7 sequences flip out. I would if I could, believe me - I like SNES9X's interface better.

But the sound seems the same to me...

If your PC can handle bsnes, I would definitely recommend that one for Secret of Mana. It's like playing on the real system.

Anyone have the best recommendations for the Android Platform?

Getting a new phone soon and plan on loading it up with old games and romhacks.
