Wii Virtual Console question
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:05:20 PM »
So, is there a way to modify the "games" aka ROMs once you purchase them and stick them on either the Wii or the SD card?

I'd like to edit some of the downloaded SNES games for various things.  IE Apply the VWF patch to Secret of Mana and play my FF2usHT inplace of FF2.

i know nothing about the Wii, but assuming the SD card is removable, is its file system readable by a computer?  if it isn't off the bat, there's probably some utility available on the net.

I know it is possible to 'inject' patched ROMs into virtual console files.
There have been tons of games made available that have not been officially released for VC including hacks.
Check out wiiso.com for details.

It's a very dangerous process.  You can inject your ROM into a virtual console .wad file as long as the resulting wad file is the same size as it was, otherwise it will not work, and if I remember correctly, it could brick your console.  Also, your banner (icon + name) will remain the same (which is why I have multiple games with the Donkey Kong Country 2 banner) - changing that is very dangerous and will brick your console if you mess up the checksum on it.  If you want to play SoM with the VWF patch, you'll have to find a different wad to inject it into, since that patch increases the size of the ROM.

I know it's not easy, but there's no danger of bricking your wii. There are so many anti-brick protections now that very few things aside from randomly deleting operation files will do it.
There are tons of injected VC games with their own banners so that isn't an issue either.
Pretty much the only restrictions are concerning games that use special chips and size restrictions.
There's a list of un-injectable games at wiiso.com, too.
And a lot of the guys there take requests so they even have a request section.

All I see about roms is to either mod my console or use some sort of disc.  So simply copying the rom to an sd card and replacing the data myself via hex editor won't work?

It's more complicated that that. It involves rebuilding the .wad files with the new data.
You will have to soft-mod your wii for the injected ROMs to work, but that to is now an easy and safe process that doesn't take more than about an hour and is fully reversible.

These are the games that don't work: http://www.wiiso.com/showthread.php?t=46469
