General Discussion / Re: Gamefaqs + eternal stupidity

The fact that FF4 is compared to FF6 is  :banonsmash: worthy.

1) Sure FF4 (not DS) is pretty linear, but I'm not sure how you could hold that against it, since even the more popular games (CT) is pretty linear. Sure there are a lot of optional quests in modern games with looser storylines, but they are not required to complete a game... everyone nowadays are in the MMORPG syndrome... just find/complete quest and claim a prize. It's the same thing here. I'm not sure that's "remarkably" better in any way shape or form.

2) Character distinctness is important, but if everyone obsesses over having characters be the same-powerhouse as the next guy, then I'm not sure why they even have names. The fact that I can get lame Cyan to case the most basic magic that I commonly use, it makes me just as valuable than the next guy, even if Cyan's Magic Power is the worst in the game (although, I forget if Gogo is worse). There's absolutely no challenge, especially since the game WANTS you to learn as much magic as you can, especially with the faster learning espers. Sure FF4 was designed to be fixed in so many ways... stats, spell learning... pretty much the progression of stuff. So what? You have to LEARN the characters in FF4 to be able to maximize them. Espers almost makes you want to LEARN how you max their stat growths or makes you want to find out how much faster you can learn spells at crack speeds. Skills be damned as their importance becomes SIGNIFICANTLY less once you gain magic. Are most of Sabin's Blitzes overrated? Did you lol @ Cyan's Swordtech speeds? How often did you use Celes's Runic to save you from the Brachiosaur's Ultima, only to be raped by Meteor? Seriously, people don't realize that the skills on the characters are virtually obsolete (for the most part) because of magic. In FF4, you knew that Rydia sucked balls offensively (for most of the game), but her magic was awesome. Everyone knew Yang couldn't avoid a magical cold to save his life. Tellah didn't impress anyone, unless you knew how to abuse Osmose and Cure and Cure3. But hey, if every character is the same, what's in a name?

Edit: Addendum

In regards to FF5, that game was distinct, somewhat when it came to jobs... however the characters ended up being "the same" in the end. You end up having to build essentially 2 fighters and 2 spellcasters... or if you're crazy, an "omni-fighterwiz". The whole point of spending time in a job is to maximize the skills of a character, whether active or passive, so that they become virtually overpowered at the end of the game. It's most certainly different and amazing. It's still not very comparable to FF4 nor FF6.

3) Character development only gets progressively better during the SNES series of games (and perhaps Squaresoft in general). FF4's character development was weak, but it was "good enough" I guess. By the time you get to FF6, the storytelling has gotten better. I'm not sure why there should be a comparison... games get better over time. If we thought FF4 sucked ass so bad in the past, there may never have been a FF6 to play!

I'm sure I have more, but there's too much ignorance in that thread to kill yourself with.

Game crashes and console or emu explodes IN YOUR FACE!

Seriously though, it's intentional, but eh why not find out for yourself? Remember that you are not able to buy anything until the next town... Frigidia or whatever it was called.

My best guess though it would be like the BOF2 event (I think) where you put all the money in the bank in order to avoid losing $$$. In this case, you would lose whatever you have.... but it's unclear what the result would be.

The worst case is that the script keeps looping indefinately because you are unable to give him enough $$$.

Figures, it would take virtually forever at 9GP IIRC per battle at the time (~1000 battles... a few less because of the first battle I think).

This is going to sound really pathetic, but...I've done it before. Well, me and my mom; we took turns wasting our lives. The fact that having the gil changed nothing was disappointing, but at the same time it's exactly what I expected would happen.

Well, I've seen leveling in the 50s for Tellah, just to see if his other stats would go up...

Anyways, the only nice trick in the game is to decline Tristan's original offer for bombs to costt EXACTLY the amount of GP you got from the Minotaur boss...

Hmmm... has anyone confirmed that actually obtaining 9000GP for the Elixir allows you to get the Dragon Claw early? I remember reading that as a rumored effect, but since we're discussing it, it's worth confirming it.

I'm surprised some of the records fall in line with what I think, although I wouldn't put down the Colts. There's a greater chance that the Titans will come back down to earth, naturally speaking, with the Chargers winning the AFC West... the NFC West is STILL PATHETIC, and lol Lions.

I don't think the NFC South is that good either...

Additionally.. I think the Vikings will outright suck this year. Starting off the season with a lost QB is not the way to go (not that he was good in the first place, and you could've had Matt Cassel for a steal).

One other thing I do recall...

Increasing Magic Defense (or Defense for that matter) is only useful if the target is not weak vs anything.

You'll see a little change in damage when you expose a weakness with a maxed out Defense/Magic Defense stat.

Tea was her name and she had the morning star for some reason--probably like you said in the beta.

Most people don't pick up on it (it was pointed out to me by someone else), but Benjamen's name is B and Phoebe's name is Tea: With a little rearranging, their names spell beta.

Also, those shots have a few floor tiles in the Ice Pyramid that aren't present in the final game (or ROM, IIRC).

Funny thing is Benjamin is the Japanese name given but the US and English UK release his name is DemoPlay.  :D  I don't know French or German well enough to know what those translate out to.

It's still Benjamin in the manual, but Demoplay in the demo-game. I hate the haxor known as Demoplay!  :banonsmash:

The only major events AFAIK in Baron would be the following:

1) Initial DK Cecil

2) Paladin Cecil in empty castle

3) Gotten Enterprise

4) Attach Hook To Enterprise

5) Big Whale (before and/or after) and Odin (before and/or after)

That should cover most of it, so go figure.

It would seem to be the most accessible during the Paladin Cecil phase of the game.

1. So the more HP the Hero has the more DMG monsters do, or the more HP the monster has the more DMG they do?

Latter.

2. Already putting counter on every monster.  :D

I meant, you can do all the various counters.. like HP damage, petri-touch, para-touch, psychoshield (only for magic of course), poison-touch... I think that's most of them anyways.

Quote
2a. Can you give me an example?

I'm not sure what you're addressing...

Like, if it's for the HP-to-monster damage thing, increasing the HP like double increases the damage output of the monster (it's probably not double)... I remember running Demoplay through them just to see how much harder the monsters were to the overpowered AI.

It would also be worth looking into haxing in switching your ally's weapon (with a button)... now that would be something.

Have you ever seen the FFMQ box? It shoulds a Phoebe character named T with a Morning Star... that's what I'd thought I'd see in game, but that was from a beta probably.

Also, make sure Cure doesn't work on the final boss. It is not characterized as a Zombie attack, but it's probably messing with overflow or something to actually take damage.

The only thing unbalanced were most of the godly equipment for some characters...

I was talking more about the incomplete back door of the Rubicante floor... the Crystal Room's back door does teleport you to the back location, but that's a one way trip...

There's a good chance that you would not have been able to pick up the Crystals (maybe you were meant to talk with them), but you would also fall down there and perhaps through the "hidden exit" for better show.

Edit: NM, the eyes imply you are going upstairs, so that wouldn't be the case. Oh well. Perhaps the incomplete back area of Rubicante was meant to be the trapdoor.... otherwise it is there for show or maybe it was intended to be a passage to the Giant of Babil, but was never finished.

IIRC, it probably would have been connected to part of the Rubicante area at the back, but that area is totally incomplete if you walk-through-walls around the trap to the Underground....

The only info worth looking into is whether Edward's solo battle affects EXP for inactive characters. I believe it doesn't because noone in the active party gains any of it, but it would be nice to check on it.

Only characters in the battle get experience. From what I remember of looking at the special battle ASM, in Edward's solo battle the others are removed and re-added right before and after the battle.

This extended from a Gamefaqs discussion about EXP for members not in your party who are coming back (which went to hell). I meant characters like Kain and Tellah... are they getting the EXP from this battle?
