General Discussion / Re: Site Outages
« on: February 20, 2014, 03:39:16 AM »
I have heard another complaint about this on one of our other sites... I'd love to know times when the site is down, as specific as possible. I'll check the server logs. Thanks for reporting.

Slick News / Slick Has Moved!
« on: July 30, 2011, 07:09:57 PM »
The server move for slickproductions is complete. With any luck, no one even noticed the forum downtime (~20 minutes). If anything seems amiss on our new home, please contact Lenophis or me. Cheers.

Slick News / Server Move (Again)
« on: July 24, 2011, 06:47:49 PM »
Hey Everyone, slick's admin here. Looks like you're going to be reminded that I exist again for a little while, as we move to another server yet again. I'll be performing the move over the next few days, and with any luck you'll never even notice. Except that I'll lock down the forms for a few hours during the database switchover. Yay. I'll post again when its all said and done, sorry for the inconvenience.

Slick News / We're back!
« on: March 03, 2010, 08:26:34 PM »
So "Tomorrow" on Friday turned into Tuesday night. Sorry about the lack of warning, but the sysadmin for the server couldn't do the upgrade on saturday, so it got moved, and I forgot to update this post. Anyways, slick is back and I'm working on bringing the other sites online now.

Slick News / Downtime tomorrow
« on: February 26, 2010, 11:12:55 PM »
The sysadmin of Gopherbork is planning on installing Gentoo Linux on our server tomorrow (we're currently running Debian). The site will be down from about 10am PST till the upgrade is complete, hopefully less than 6 hours. See you all on the other side, from Gentoo!

General Discussion / Re: So I got a ticket....
« on: February 24, 2010, 04:01:45 AM »
I'm sorry to hear that you got caught in a sucky no-win situation like that. You have more patience with the legal system than I do... I was pulled over here in Oregon in August of 2008 for exactly the same thing. It was a somewhat new law here at the time. Basically exactly the same situation, one cop pulls people over for speeding with another one hiding in a nearby driver to catch people who pass the first one. In my case, I had room to pull over, and I didn't slow down, though I did carefully look to ensure that I wouldn't hit anyone or anything (the cop was in his car, or on the other side of it). I did not dispute the charge, but I did go to court and they lowered the ticket to the lowest minimum, which was something like $180. The courtroom experience was interesting. I was the very last person to go up after waiting an hour and a half. The judge gave every single person in that room the lowest possible fine. It's like you get rewarded for just showing up.

Anyways, good luck in fighting the charge, and let us know how it turns out. At the very least, I bet neither you nor I will ever make the same mistake again, so, in a way, the law is working :/

General Discussion / Re: Google Chrome

I might be one of few Mac users here, but I just switched to using Chome from Safari and Firefox before that. Overall, I'm pretty impressed, though I'm using the latest beta version and there are a few rough edges. It is amazingly quick compared to the other browsers, and I really like the fact that each tab is run in a seperate process. Creating and closing tabs has a very direct and immediate effect on the available system memory, which for someone who is usually pushing the limits of his computer is a very nice thing. The interface is very crisp and minimalistic -- they use tabs ala beta versions of safari 4 where the tabs are part of the title bar of the window which I always liked. Dragging tabs is nice, you can create new windows and they have a slick visual trick of showing a "preview" window as you drag. I slightly prefer the way Safari 4 works though, with its little preview boxes.

From a web development perspective, its just about the same as Safari 4, using the exact same debugging interface. I have noticed a few bugs in it that I didn't see in Safari however. They also haven't fixed the inability to inspect an element inside an iframe.

Overall, its a very fast and stable browser that I'll probably continue to use everyday. Except when I have to test things in IE7. Ugh. :)

Slick News / Good News: The Server Transition is complete
« on: December 01, 2009, 01:11:54 PM »
I wanted to let everyone know that the transition from Pair networks to Slicehost has been completed, and the domains redirected. As far as I know there was no downtime. I'm somewhat amazed that it all went so well.

The only thing not yet worked out on the public facing side of the transition is the forum's outgoing mail server, which I still need to setup on this server. Until then, the forum won't be able to send out mail, so please don't forget your passwords!

Slick News / Temporary location and domain downtime
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:29:22 PM »
Good News! The main move of Slick Productions is complete. The forum has been upgraded to the latest version of SMF, and everything lives on our new awesome Slice Host server. Unfortunately, there are a few issues with the transition:
  • I waited a bit too long with the domain transfer, and as such, there may be a period of time (the next five days or so) where the domain is down. Sorry :/ :isuck: In the meantime, the site will live at
  • I haven't setup DKK's site or MNRogar's site on the new server yet. That will happen soon.
  • The new version of SMF isn't compatible with our old themes, so everyone has been reset to the default (and rather obnoxious) pastel blue theme. As I'm not the one who created the themes, we'll have to wait till Leno or DKK can update them.
  • Some of the most recent additions to the site haven't been transferred yet, but I should get that fixed soon.

Thanks to everyone for enduring this rough patch in Slick Productions life. I'm doing my best to get everything working.

Slick News / Server Migration and Downtime tonight
« on: November 24, 2009, 06:17:33 PM »
Hey Everyone, SP's sysadmin speaking :) Slick Productions will be going down tonight for a few hours while I move the site to a new server and update the DNS. With any luck this will go smoothly and everything will back up and running by midnight, but I can't make any promises. My apologies for any disruptions this causes.

General Discussion / Hypher getting an OS upgrade
« on: March 21, 2009, 02:56:25 PM »
So this is mainly news for Leno, but it may affect you guys as well. As you may or may not know, Hypher is one of the servers slick stuff is posted on. It doesn't have the best track record in terms of uptime or stability. I'm doing a small overhaul of the network here at my house, and in the process I'm going to wipe the server and put a shiny fresh Ubuntu Server install on it. Anyways, what that means is that for the next 24 hours or so, anything on will be unavailable while I re-install linux and get the web server back up and all that. Hopefully, when the dust settles, everything will be way more awesome than it was before :)

P.S. I'm glad everyone is here and making good use of my server resources... I don't have nearly enough time to do anything awesome with them :)

I had a childhood friend die at the the age of 16 a fews years back in a car he was driving. Like you say, to lose a person so early into their life is such a tragedy. And to something as stupid as a drug high.
This reaffirms my belief that we MUST reform how we treat drug use in this country, and how we must do a better job of education.
