Playoffs, Wild Card round results:

Lenophis = 3-1
assassin = 4-0
Deathlike2 = 4-0

man, somebody needs to tabulate results for the later weeks of the regular season.

in case i don't get around to doing my detailed posts like i've done in past years:

Texans, Packers, and Ravens.  (those might change if i study things more.)

i'm less decisive on the 4th matchup, so that can wait.

compare the authors' descriptions:

http://www.rpglegion.com/ff6/hack/evade.htm

Terii's is a bugfix.  it makes Evade work, and it activates all the code that was skipped as a result of the Evade Bug (e.g. Beads reducing hit rate).

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1097/

HatZen08's fixes that bug, and also has a bit of a re-envisioning.  it apparently gives Reflect status priority over Clear.  also, it majorly changes L.X spells.  they'll end up with 255/Level_multiple as a hit rate.  however, because he never clears the top half of A before this division, the results might be gibberish.  also, with general attacks, he seems to use target Evade or MBlock as the hit rate, ignoring the attack's hit rate entirely.  that really makes no sense, so maybe i'm misunderstanding something.

bottom line is, the older one just addresses a bug, and has 11+ years of user testing.

hey, the bar's not that low.  Smith had the third best Bears winning percentage in the last half century.

1) yeah, he doesn't seem to be able to dissect a defense like a Manning or a Brady does.  then again, anyone will look dumb without ample time.  i know you don't like Favre, and he made some poor decisions (both on the field and off), but speaking of him as opposite of a "good QB" is a bit silly, since he was a great one.

2) how much could the offensive line be shored up, if they were to dump the salaries of a couple big-name players (e.g. Cutler and Marshall), and replace them with simply average players?

3) still, i'd favor ~2 more years of Urlacher over 0 years, and the possibility of the latter just went up.  maybe he heals slower now, but he has a whole offseason ahead of him to rehab.

in addition to backing off to Peyton (in the Super Bowl) after that deep ball that was a fault of the DB

refresh my memory on this.

anyway, if they bring in an o-coordinator type as head coach, i hope he's smart and humble enough to focus revamp efforts on the offense, and only do minor tweaking to the defense.

oh man.. Lovie Smith got canned today.  it's somewhat, but not entirely, surprising, and i can't say i agree with it.

from a Yahoo article: "Smith, who posted an 81-63 regular season mark with the team since 2004, and a 6-3 record in the postseason, had just three losing records in his tenure with the organization -- 5-11 in his first season, and two 7-9 seasons."

that's a damned solid record over 9 years.  never going below 7 and 9, except in his 1st season, where anybody should have a lot of leeway.

some will bluster that, "Winners win championships!" or whatever.  but that's glib, because there's so much outside of a head coach's control (e.g. injuries, draft picks, etc).  winning without going all the way can be heartbreaking, but to have so many bouts with this frustration requires the team be successful to begin with.  truly bad teams avoid heartbreak by never inducing any hope or suspense. :P

the offense needed an overhaul anyway, so i'm not sure how much this move will hurt that unit.  but what of the Bears' stand-out defense?  defensive-minded Smith is gone.  coordinator Marinelli is probably gone as well.  sure, you have veteran players who spent a lot of time in this system, and won't forget their teachings right away ...  but will they even want to stick around?  there are a number of guys in their 30s, who might just call it an early retirement.  or maybe they'll follow Smith and/or Marinelli if they're hired elsewhere.

call it lack of imagination, but i'm having a hard time picturing who will do better than Lovie.  he put together the team's best winning percentage (56%) since Ditka (63%).

- so in FF4, could you remove Reflect from non-bosses by reflecting Dispel off your own party, and hoping it hits the right enemy?  involved, but it could be useful if the enemy doesn't re-apply it for awhile.

- did you see Djibriel's thread where he made an auto-Berserk helmet in FF6 and tried to play through?

thanks for the background.

FF4 - Dispel removes a small number of statuses, though probably Berserk status is the most notable. It also removes Sap/HP Leak (no idea exactly why), the various Image based statuses, and Reflect (though, useless because the spell itself is reflectable).

hah, that last part is dumb.  or is there there some way to temporarily override Reflect via a status like Vanish? i'm unfamiliar with FF4.

Quote
FF5 - Dispel was pretty much geared for removing any statuses that weren't status afflictions (like Poison or Blind). So, anything that allowed you to glow, or float, or even give multiple images was made for Dispel.
FF6 - Dispel isn't as useful, despite it being very much like FF5 outside of Berserk (which, I didn't notice).

Dispel removes Berserk in both of these games (assuming FF5's Algs Guide is correct), so i don't follow you.

Quote
Remember that Berserk prior to FF6 was more beneficial (50% more damage is pretty good) when you didn't have total control like you did in FF6. I would say that Berserk status in FF6 isn't so special (did anyone really need it?)

you could slap it on Gau/Gogo when they're Raging, and get a physical damage boost without sacrificing any more controllability.  same deal with Umaro and his Bone Club strike.  there's also Fanatics' Tower, to get around the Magic-only restriction.  though the L.X0 Magics' Defense ratings are even higher than their Magic Defense, so it's not worth it unless you're using one of the few Defense-ignoring weapons.  anyway, agreed Berserk's not useful for much -- it's more relevant when enemies stick you with it.

Gaming Discussion / Dispel removing Slow and Stop in FF5 and FF6

any idea what reasoning Square would have in doing this?

i first noticed it in FF6.  generally, Dispel removes statuses which are beneficial, or a mixed bag (i.e. Berserk). but Slow and Stop are decidedly negative statuses (yes, i'm sure there are a few situations where they can help you, but that's getting a bit contrived).

at first, i thought that maybe Square copied Remedy's stats over to Dispel, and forgot to clear what was in Status Byte 3.  but then, i decided to look at the FF5 Algorithms FAQ, and realized that that game removes those statuses as well.  so FF6 was probably making a nod to its predecessor.  the difference between the two is that FF5's Heal does not remove the statuses, in contrast with FF6's Remedy.

why would FF5 have these statuses lifted by Dispel instead of Heal in the first place?  i notice that each spell lifts 10 statuses; maybe Square was going for symmetry, or is there some sort of engine limitation on the quantity?  any theories would be appreciated.

if i skim your posts right, you've only picked the Vikings to lose once this entire season.  this homerism will not help with accuracy! :P

they probably just forgot to update part of the "C2 - new.txt" file when updating the patch.  ails_ya.asm is what the patch is actually made from, so that's the more relevant one.  "C2 - new.txt" exists just for documentation, to show what the altered code looks like in a format matching that of the original disassembly.

----------

i'm trying to figure out what called that C2/6510 code..  what values do C2/086C thru C2/086E hold?

i'm trying to guess what the hell would put a "JSR $5763" at C2/6510 to begin with.  my "Control menu responds poorly to MP change fix" uses that instruction, but it's at C2/6555.

put all the patches you're using in a single directory, and run mblock129's Patch Conflict Finder to figure out what's using that area:

While these two patches are neat, I'm not sure how I feel about the side effects, seems pretty imbalanced.

The 'Guest Adder' patch he did is super awesome, I'm definitely gonna play around with that one. ;)

I've never seen the fellow before, my guess is he's a Japanese ROM hacker.

yeah, he's living in a bit of a vacuum if he's unaware of free space in Bank C2 to allow for the original Retort code and his additions.  (if this were dealt with, and one didn't want to wait the full Retort time for each the "charge" and the actual counter, then one solution is to give Retort a "Time to Wait" half of what the hack currently does.)
