Quite simply, is there any way/method to avoid getting the pricing corruption that's caused by excessive item description length?

You answered your own question by stating cause and result. Just think about it for a second and you'll know what to do.

And why does the pricing corruption happen at all?

Simple explanation: game uses the same ram which causes this bug.

Well, something did happen, because I had no way of making any file changes to the site for the past month. DKK and Mnrogar had the same issues. I've been working so much that I wasn't able to bring it up with Hypher until this last week. Server permissions have been restored, at least.

I could use some help here getting the game to display more than 5 digits damage in battle--that's beyond my capabilities it seems.  :(

I tried adding in some digits to the final game time in Super Metroid, which is the same as this (adding in sprites), and I caved in because I couldn't find what was controlling it. FF4 is just about as messy code-wise, so there's no way I'm even going to try that disaster. :p

Good luck getting anyone to do that for you, btw. No, seriously.

This bug is actually pretty common, scattered throughout the game. I have a theory that can fix this instance, but until I test it I won't know for sure.

Honestly, I've never heard of this before. But I imagine the feature would be database-driven, so any emulator that uses a database to verify games could support this, in theory.

there are 3 varieties of the patch, and not a single one of them match it

I suspect the numbers came from the first iteration before you gave the mondo assist with the optimization.
