Epic bump for great justice.

Thanks to the services of one Gil Galad, the FF1 speedrun I recently completed will have a home until SDA verifies it. That will likely take a while since their Awesome Games Done Quick marathon is right around the corner, so this run will remain up for the immediate future. Enjoy.

There's an event command you aren't using. Look for it in the dump. *hint, search the burning house...*

Why is GameFAQs so inconsistent with modding anything involving patches? :zemogus:

It makes me want to :banonsmash:

Or more accurately, who are the trolls that want to cling to that board with a deathgrip?

Game Modification Station / Re: Increasing Esper Name length to 12 Letters
« on: December 27, 2010, 02:48:36 PM »
It's a problem if the indexing goes beyond the 8-bit range while the index register is still in 8-bit mode. For example:

Code: [Select]
Esper name displaying in most menus (this is not used to generate the esper list!)
C3/34E6: 201935  JSR $3519
C3/34E9: B91E00  LDA $001E,Y
C3/34EC: C9FF    CMP #$FF
C3/34EE: F018    BEQ $3508      (branch if no esper equipped)
C3/34F0: 0A      ASL A
C3/34F1: 0A      ASL A
C3/34F2: 0A      ASL A
C3/34F3: AA      TAX
C3/34F4: A00800  LDY #$0008     (esper name length)
C3/34F7: BFE1F6E6 LDA $E6F6E1,X  (Load Esper name)
C3/34FB: 8D8021  STA $2180
C3/34FE: E8      INX
C3/34FF: 88      DEY
C3/3500: D0F5    BNE $34F7
C3/3502: 9C8021  STZ $2180      (end this string)
C3/3505: 4CD97F  JMP $7FD9
A is 8-bit, while X and Y are 16-bit. Now imagine if it read like this:
Code: [Select]
Esper name displaying in most menus (this is not used to generate the esper list!)
C3/34E6: 201935  JSR $3519
C3/34E9: B91E00  LDA $001E,Y
C3/34EC: C9FF    CMP #$FF
C3/34EE: F018    BEQ $3508      (branch if no esper equipped)
C3/34F0: 0A      ASL A
C3/34F1: 0A      ASL A
C3/34F2: 0A      ASL A
C3/34F3: AA      TAX
C3/34F4: A008  LDY #$08     (esper name length)
C3/34F7: BFE1F6E6 LDA $E6F6E1,X  (Load Esper name)
C3/34FB: 8D8021  STA $2180
C3/34FE: E8      INX
C3/34FF: 88      DEY
C3/3500: D0F5    BNE $34F7
C3/3502: 9C8021  STZ $2180      (end this string)
C3/3505: 4CD97F  JMP $7FD9
Here, X and Y are 8-bit, which means any number greater than 255 would wrap back to 0, giving bad look-ups. There's no such thing as a "rom limit," only hardware limitations, and amount of effort you're willing to put into it.

I love it, and only because it's the perfect capper to this insanity known as the 2010-2011 season. If it had been any other year, with a bunch of really good teams, then I'd probably say  :bah:

Considering the playoffs are only on Saturdays and Sundays, and there's far fewer games overall, yes, that would be acceptable. Although if Blizzardelphia ever clears up (there's a small chance they don't get to play the game Tuesday) then the Eagles could really be in a pickle for the first round.

A move that was beginning to be expected, Mike Singletary is out in San Fran.

I wanted to ask if Pandora's box is designed to run on actual SNES hardware.
I have no means to test this hack on the actual console (yet), but all of the tests with bsnes, and with DKK and Imzogelmo both testing it on the console shows that so far, we are 100% console compatible. That's goal #1.

Quote
Also, since byuu is making great progress with bsnes (byuu.org), especially with coprocessors, etc. I was wondering if it would be feasible/helpful to try and utilize some of the extra processing power that would be available when all the coprocessor emulation is complete.
There's no point. The game would need a massive tweaking/rewrite just to get the extra chips to work, and I'm not willing to do that. I doubt the rest of the team is willing to put off this project any longer than it already has for something minor like that.

Quote
Also, what about the MSU 1? CD quality music would be a cool optional feature as a side download.
No consoles have MSU 1 support yet, despite whatever byuu may claim. Adding MSU to Pandora's Box would limit the hack to one emulator, and it wouldn't work on the console. This is out.

Quote
PS: this is a little of topic, but can someone explain the different objectives of FF6 improvement vs. Pandora's box? It looks to me like FF6 improvement is more of a "finish fixing everything" patch, and pandora's is more of an expansion to the original game. Am I right?
Well, darkmage can explain his improvement project, cause I'm not really sure myself.

Pandora's Box started out as a rebalancing effort, because the original game was just too easy. In time, it kept growing, with all of the expanded stuff, mass AI changes, mass core changes and additions, tweaked music, added music, and there's probably more I'm forgetting. And with all of the hype it generated in the past, it's likely to become the Phantom Menace of rom hacks. :whoa:

What I wanted to do was unlock some potential of this game, and I think we're achieving that.

All I seem to do is raise considerable amounts of hell/drama. :isuck: Although after that whole discussion, I read one of his DSP checksum threads (it appears to have since been deleted or edited out), and he explicitly stated that he didn't want to be responsible for bad dumps to be out there, and this was after several posts of him saying he will not leak it to anybody, anywhere, anytime.

So yeah, lots of fun stuff. :childish:

Game Modification Station / Re: To all users of my Summon This! patch
« on: December 22, 2010, 09:56:54 AM »
The "summon this!" patch does not work with the FF6 improvement patch and I wanted to see if I could fix it by myself. The problem with the improvement patch is that code gets shifted around.
I'm amazed you did manage to do that yourself.

Quote
I did release a version of your patch and you were given proper credit at the ff6hacking website.
That's not the issue.

Quote
If you want, I can take it down and send you the patch.
This is a gray area. My update isn't done yet, and until it is, there's no way for this patch to be compatible with assassin's fix yet. Hang on to it until my update is ready. That won't be for a bit yet, because I'm working on a super sekrit thing right now and it requires my full attention.

on the bright side, the patch's commenting is very thorough, and it's likely the conflicting area is just shifted code rather than materially rewritten.
I'll likely have to make a new assembly file for that one, cause there's so much shifting going on and there's a minimal amount of changes. Easy enough.

1: The patch does work.
2: After some investigation, tests reveal it conflicts with assassin's Brushless Sketch fix. If you used his patch before or after my patch, Very Bad Things will happen.
3: angelo, the next time you tweak one of my patches again without coming to me first will be a cold day in hell for you.

I need to look into other patches that might be tweaking the code my patch is tweaking, and pump an update out.
