It would really suck if The Sketching Mime interfered with Not Scary Enough. Especially since I have no idea how to fix the conflicts or what caused it. All I did was use FF3usME.

What I can't stand about these ports is that they're just upgrades of the second worst port of the game, and that was an upgrade of the absolute worst port of the game. Despite that, everyone's lauding it like it's the second coming of Jesus and saying it's the best thing on the PSP. What the hell? I could see it if this was based off the cellphone version and utilized the DS translation, but it doesn't.

Instead, they just Ctrl+H'd "summon beast" to "eidolon" and "The Land of the Summoned Monsters" to "The Feymarch." Then, they took that "new and improved" GBA script and dumped it into a bland, RPGMaker shell.

As it stands, I plan on buying FFIV DS and maybe pirating this for that crappy Interlude and TAY.

Am I the only one really unimpressed with this so far? I mean, I don't own a PSP, but I've seen the screenshots and the videos, and it just...isn't impressive. It's the European FFIV GBA with new graphics. I haven't played much of it either, but the DS version seems to be better.

Gaming Discussion / Final Fantasy series "teaser text"
« on: April 25, 2011, 05:52:17 AM »
Hey guys! I have no idea where else to place this, so I thought I'd put it here.

As I mentioned in darkmage's "Final Fantasy VI Improvement" thread, I was introducing some younger kids to the FF series. I really wanted to sell the PS1 era FFs to the kids, but my explanations basically consisted of, "This is awesome and it is a milestone game NOW LET'S PLAY IT." At the same time, I was noticing the back of the PS1 FF boxes really suck. I mean, seriously, FFIX doesn't even have a bulletpoint features list. It just has a quote saying, "THIS IS THE BEST FF EVER OMG IT'S BY SQUARE BUY IT NOW."

There's more to this story, however. I heard about the improvements made to FFVIII when they ported it to Windows, and I wanted to play it solely for those changes. However, the prices were outrageous, so I opted for piracy. When I went to the torrent site to download it, I found that the uploader even went the extra mile to write his own little story teaser. I really enjoyed it, so I saved it in a .TXT file.

I decided I'd rewrite the jewel case "backsides" for the three PS1 Final Fantasies with my own personal flair. However, I noticed that the other games up until XII had really sucky "box backsides," so I decided to include them all, from I to X-2. I must say I'm pleased with the results.

Unfortunately, when it came time to finally read the text to the kids, their fear of being scorned by their father due his attitude towards JRPGs won out over my innocent little experiment. This basically sat around on my hard drive until I chose to upload it as an attachment here.

Have some "making of" notes, since I give that out like candy.

I had 5 base goals for each set of "teaser text."
1. A snappy tagline.
2. Draw the "customer" into the story without giving too much away.
3. Make it compatible with every version of the game released. I made an exception for FFIII, which I solely based off the DS version.
4. At least four "bulletpoints of interest" and utilize any quotations that would help it "sell."
5. A sense of self-inclusion for the "customer." This one was really important to me.

-For Final Fantasy I, IV, and VI, I based my text off the backs of their original US release boxes. No sense reinventing the wheel, after all.
-For Final Fantasy IX, X, and X-2, I based my text off the backs of their original European release cases.
-For FFVIII, I combined the European release's case with the text I found on the torrent download page. I'm really pleased with how the merge turned out.
-I REALLY wanted to "sell" FFVII to the kids, so I put a bit more effort into it than others. I used the "teaser text" found on Warmech.net, the European case, the US case, the PC boxes, and made sure to include all of their bulletpoints and quotes. I hope my love for this game shows!

Please enjoy, or trash it and walk away, or something so long as you read it!

Quick question, darkmage--are you including the battle speed mod in this? It seems like the behavior of this was unintended, given the way FFIV through FFV's re-releases' ATBs work.

Ahaha, lots of bugs seem to be popping up lately. Here's to hoping you're not entirely discouraged, darkmage!

Hey! I'm glad to see this is progressing smoothly. I played through the first bit of the initial release with a friend's little brother--I liked the fixes, and he just fell in love with VI.

As for the Phantom Train's name in battle, I believe "Phantom T." would fit. If you'd like, you could go for the FFVIII route and call it Doomtrain.

EarthBound (SNES}
Nothing much to say. I've just beaten the Titanic Ant and gone to Twoson.

Final Fantasy III (SNES)
I was playing this with my friend's little brother until her computer crashed. :bah: We got as far as the scenario split up. It's nice to just play a game and not follow a walkthrough or be concerned about translation differences.

Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
I was looking at mods for the PC version and decided I wanted to try it. I finally settled on the Remix patch, but I ran into some issues with it. When all was said and done, I still wanted to play FFVII, so I chose to play the PS1 game. Now all I need to do is keep telling myself that this is the superior version... :isuck: At least my save was still on my memory card. I just finished the second mandatory Gold Saucer event, the one with the date. Now I'm headed to the Temple of the Ancients!

Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
I've so far put 106 hours into this. I'm amazing this game has kept my attention span for so long... I'm going to Giruvegan next, but before that I'm gonna take down some Marks. I'm really impressed with this FF so far. The characters are likable, the story is good, the graphics are pretty, and there's even a bit of exploration to be done. Needless to say, I'm impressed.

Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
:wtf: What's this!? A current-gen console game, on this kid's list!? Yes, it's true! What I did was rent the game and take it over to my friend's house; her family owns a PS3, you see. I was impressed. Everything is just amazing, though of course it's not without its flaws. It's sort of odd how I first got into FFXIII, especially because I had no interest in it prior to realizing this. On the actual progress aspect, I was about to get into Palom Porom--er, I mean Palumpolum with Lightning and Hope.

Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals (DS)
"Wait," I hear a cry from the audience, "You just said you didn't own any new-gen consoles!" Ah, but a handheld isn't a console. See what I did there? Anyway, a friend of mine sent me a used DS and a copy of this wonderful game--for free! :whoa: I know such wonderful people. This game is just...wow. Even if it was a budget remake, you can tell all those involved--except Square-Enix, but that's typical--put a lot of love and hard work into this game. I've beaten it once already, and I plan to beat it many more times in the future.

Lufia: The Legend Returns (GBC)
I beat this and finished my hack for it, too! I never beat the Ancient Cave, however, so I think I'll need to replay this in the future. Maybe after I've looked into flashcarts...?

Lufia: The Ruins of Lore (GBA)
The Pokemon-type aspect of this game is rather annoying, but it's interesting to see some of the larger changes Neverland made to Curse of the Sinistrals came from here--even if Neverland didn't make this side-story.

Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
I've almost beaten this! I'm at Hollow Bastion, and I've just beaten Riku. I was waiting to finish this with a friend, however, so I guess getting my copy of Final Fantasy X-2 back will wait until 2011.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PS1)
This game is vastly better than the first one. I'm about to go into the record store Giga Macho. Thinking about it, I'm sort of intrigued as to how the heck this ties into Joker's master plan to bring down Tatsuya, Lisa and Maya.

Revelations: Persona (PS1)
I got all the way to the final dungeon before I gave up. I don't care what the purists say, the battle music in this game is terrible. It gives me a headache and doesn't even have a melody to it. I'd like to play the PSP version--I believe the cool kids call it P1P?--but I don't have a PSP. I was undeterred, however, and decided to try the second game in the series.

Riviera: The Promised Land (GBA)
I completed Tetyth for the first time.

No, that's what I posted all those years ago. There was a meme or something after someone legitimately had his post moderated, where there would be variations of the classic GameFAQs moderation message itself. I'm fairly certain I misspelled "moderator" in that post, too.

General Discussion / Re: RIP July 2010, may you never return

My July was more boring than a morgue. I just wish school would start already.

And of course my August has to start off with some teen drama bullshit. To top it off--well, let me just make a list.

-sinus infection in every upper orfice;
-what is probably only one or two but feels like six freaking cavities;
-what feels like first-degree burns on my tongue; and
-scalp psoriasis that makes me appear to be balding at age seventeen.

Luckily, I went to the walk-in clinic today for my sinus infection(s), the psoriasis can be staved by /gasp washing my hair everyday, and I have a dentist appointment next month.

Now if only September would hurry it's ass up and get here. :bah:

1. It was the EU FFAnthology board. I was young and stupid and had jumped on a meme bandwagon; I wrote, "[this person has been hit by a car at the request of a moderator or administrator]". Clearly someone has too much time on his hands.

2. I didn't bother. You're not the first person to tell me to challenge it--not by a longshot--but I just accepted it. It didn't result in a karma loss (as if that'd be an issue) and the message itself wasn't changed much.

3. That's what I'm wondering.

...I am in awe.

I am seriously in awe here.

One of my posts from 2005--two thousand five--was moderated.

TWO-THOUSAND FIVE. On a dead board, nonetheless. Someone has too much friggin time on his hands. :bah:

I don't know what you're asking exactly, darkmage, but Djibriel's "The Loser Club" page has a lot of dummied stuff there. But everyone knows about Djibriel's Web site, so I guess this is sort of redundant.
