Wow, so far 2009 sucks. I can't wait to see what Lenophis is going to highlight in the end year review this year.

I've had Lufia fever lately. I've been obsessed with the damn games.

Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (SNES)
Did a "Try Again" playthrough and my characters ended at around level 90 (Lufia was around level 88). :whoa: Overkill, much?

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES)
Did a "Retry" playthrough, which tried my patience. See, everyone joins at a set level, right? Maxim always starts at level 1, Tia at 7, Guy at 11, Selan at 16, Dekar at 20, Lexis at 28, and Artea at 38 (I just remembered that all by heart :isuck:). Not so bad, right? Well yes, on a normal game. If you're a dumbass like I am, you'll actually bother to level up your characters in Lufia II, even on Retry mode. So thus, you'll be level 12 by the time Tia joins, 20 when Guy joins, 30 when Selan joins, 40 when Dekar joins, 55 when Lexis joins, and 70 when Artea joins.

At the very end when Artea joined, I just said "Screw it" and turned on the "Get so much EXP after battle you go to level 99 in one fight" code.

PROTIP: Don't bother to level anyone up in Try Again/Retry mode!

Oh yes, I forgot to tell you--I was testing Artemis's "Frue Lufia" patch--the one that fixes a good chunk of the more apparent bugs and also updates the text. It was a fairly nice playthrough. And we got cultural references back, yay!

While we're on the subject of Lufia patches, there's apparently a new bug fix patch called "Frue Lufia," which fixes even more bugs. It can also be found at Lufia World.

US Version: Capsule Monsters ask for rare items a good chunk of the time.
Japanese and International Versions: Capsule Monsters ask for storebought items a good chunk of the time.

you know, now that i look i have a bunch of data from the first 2 lufia games.  it's not mine, of course, someone posted it on rhdn a very long time ago and i hung onto it for the sake of archiving it(as i'm wont to do).  it also has a bunch of patches that this guy, reliquary, made.
...Huh? What? "Reliquary"? That's the title of the data set and patch collection. It's also a part of the Relinquishment, which includes the Reliquary and an archive of the Lufia series' GameFAQs board topics and messages up until 2005. Relnqshd, AKA Relinquished and Reli, was the guy who made it. He had quite the following, myself included. It was a sad day to see him go.

i don't know if they've been widely distributed or not. there's a bunch of lost data from gamefaqs and a couple other places, and his own notes and other things.  i'll send you the lufia stuff if you want.  it's like 55 megs, so if you'd like it, i'll 7zip it or something and send it to you.  on the other hand(if your connection isn't that great/you'd rather not download the whole thing), if you want to have a look first and see if there's anything you might want, i can always set you up a low-permissions account on this terminal server i'm posting from now, and you can check it out remotely first and see if anything is worthwhile.  whatever you want. or, you could even just have the remote desktop service map your local hard drive to the remote desktop and just copy whatever you want to take.
I could always get the Reliquary (Or the entire Relinquishment) from the Lufia World topic.

now that i'm home from work, i'm looking and i see that there's more stuff than i first thought.  a fair amount more, actually.  not really sure what some of it does.  some are python scripts, some are folders labelled pointers, text, compression, etc.  it looks like also a collection of lufia maps, an l2 damage formula project thing.
Yeah. Sir Relnqshd, as I jokingly used to call him, was really dedicated to the Lufia series.

apparently, there's an unused extra-strong version of gades in the l2 rom.  well, this guy added him into the game.  lots more patches then i first thought.  not about to see what they all do.  looking through these, apparently, he also made a patch to replace the casino girls in lufia 2 with their original counterparts.
We've already covered the Lufia II Fixxxer Deluxe, which fixes pretty much all the glaring bugs (And puts back in the bunny girls and Frue Gades) in the US release of the game, making the European version superior only by the fixed Capsule Monster system. Also, the US version has the Artea name fix patch, which I don't believe the European version fixed. The entire issue was that in dialogue, he was called "Artea", the name already established by Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, while he was called "Arty", the name the Japanese version apparently uses for him, everywhere else.

The US version has a number of bugs, but nothing that significant except for like maybe 2 places in the game where what you see is a fucked up map.
And that's been fixed a while back, along with several of the more glaring issues. Speaking of which, I made a rather large edit to this page, and I know several people here are RHDN higher-ups--when the time comes, would someone please approve it?

Play the European version of Lufia 2; from what I've heard the US release is actually missing a ton of code. I don't know how true that is, because I can't imagine the game working at all.

Well, let's look at things. I'll score them by raw points, most likely a flawed system, to see which one has more fixes. DX is my abbreviation for the US version with the Fixxxer Deluxe patch, while it's a no-brainer what EU stands for. If a problem wasn't addressed in either version (Or if I'm too lazy to look into it ), I'll most likely ignore it.

Using Statue in Sub-menu freezes game
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes when you use a statue in the sub-screen (bought at the mini-casino
in Alunze) your game may freeze for some unexplained reason. It also seems to
be that the music will speed up, for the rest there is not much known about
this bug. Relnqshd has made a patch to fix this problem (see the site link at
the bottom of the FAQ), alternatively don't use a statue in the sub-screen
menu.
Fixxxer DX fixes this by not allowing usage in the menu; the EU version fixes this issue without that crappy workaround. I'd say Fixxxer DX doesn't deserve the point for not looking in to see how the EU version fixed it. So far, it's DX 0-EU 1.

Level 0 - Near invincibility, but ultra slow
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many people have heard and/or somehow have been acquainted with this glitch.
What it does is simple. Due to some very strange programming bug, where you
least expect it the game screws up and turns your level 0.

What happens internally is that all the stats get boosted to real exorbitant
values, which grant any of the characters in your party a permanent boost.
However, the downside is that each time you try to load a game with level 0
glitched characters the time the game needs to start is incredibly long.

The glitch is caused by moving the cursor around in the 'Sound' under
'Config' in the main menu. For some reason changing the option several time
causes this glitch. Notice that it only works on the US version of the game.
Fixxxer DX fixes this, as does the EU version. DX 1-EU 2.

Textual Glitches
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The translators have probably made some mistakes while converting this game to
English, like some of the names are glitched sometimes:

-Gratze
Also known as Grassei and '3y kingdom

-Parcelyte
  Also known as Percelyte

-Karlloon
  Also known as Caron

-Zeppy's Underwater Cave
Also known as: 'Ue MoV T Cave' (Weird huh)

-Minataurus
This is simply "Minotaurus" spelled a little differently.

-Asashin
The translators misspelled Assassin for some reason.

-Henohman (AUS only)
In the PAL version of the game the translators managed to fix some of
the glitches in the game, so to prevent an ambiguity with the two different
Follower enemies they decided to call one of the a "Henchman". Alas due to a
silly typing error the Australians and people in Great Brittain are stuck
with Henohman instead.

-Description of the "Iron Kick" IP
The description isn't there, it's just an empty space. I guess the
  translators have forgotten about it.

-After defeating the Egg Dragon:
"Gets the Egg Sword and Egg Rings."
Rings? You only get 1 Egg Ring and nothing more.
Grassei/'3y, Percelyte, and Ue MoV T have all been fixed in the Fixxxer patch. Shame that the original Breath of Fire II Retranslation topic had to go down due to bullshit--that one had the Lufia II EU versions of these fixes listed. Guess I'll need to investigate myself.

OK, Percelyte and Ue MoV T have been fixed in the EU version as well, so I can only assume that Grassei and/or '3y have been as well. While I'm here, it looks like the Arty/Artea misspelling wasn't fixed; there's a US fix for that by Relnqshd/Reli, but by default it's not included in the Fixxxer DX patch. I think the Iron Kick IP thing is only in the EU version, but the Light spell has a description in that version as well. I think that not adding a point would be a fair way to counterbalance this. Then we have the CARON/KARLLOON error... Totaling that up, it's DX 4-EU 5. I don't think any of the enemy names were fixed in either Fixxxer DX or the EU version...

Enemy Script Glitches
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of the glitches described here were initially found by Relnqshd. Many
thanks for your help. Most of the info was found after looking inside the ROM
trying to find out how the battle system in Lufia works.

 1. Copper Dragon / Ninja Reaction Scripts
 -----------------------------------------
The Copper Dragon and Ninja don't have any protection against ailments, and
neither do they have any elemental Alignments. The script for this is there,
but because the programmers made a small error that part of the script is not
read by the SNES. This is the main reason why the Copper Dragon is so easy to
beat!

 2. Erim's Eerie Light, Thunder & Zap attacks
 --------------------------------------------
Due to a scripting error Erim can never use these attacks. Eerie Light was
meant to be an attack like Dark Fry, but it also takes away any Allies' Mirror
Status and removes ALL statistic bonuses; Including but not limited to Trick,
Beserker, Bravery and even Wave Motion! If Erim were still able to use this
attack she would be a lot tougher to fight. Relnqshd has a fixxxer patch for
this which you can download from his site.

 3. Bolt Fish locks game up
 --------------------------
This would actually fall into the 'Bugs' category since this glitch can ruin
your game. After Bolt Fish tries to use "Confuse" after you absorb all of his
MP, the game will get stuck in an infinite loop. This is caused by a
programming error that doesn't solve the error that occurs when this enemy
runs out of MP. Usually an enemy will go to another part of the script, but
this enemy gets stuck in a loop and will keep on trying to cast "Confuse" for
eternity locking the game up.

 4. Mirror, Mirror, it will never work
 -------------------------------------
A lot of enemies seem to have a glitch that doesn't allow them to use the
mirror spell. Sly Fox is an example of this. The script was programmed so that
only if the Sly Fox has the Mirror Status he will try to cast Mirror. So when
he doesn't have it he won't cast it, which means that he can never use it. You
can test this yourself; cast Mirror on a Sly Fox and he will start using
Mirror every round as well. Unfortunately this doesn't cost him any turn at
all. Other enemies like Demise and Archfiend have a similar problem that
disallows them to use Mirror. But who cares, this glitch is in the user's
advantage.

 5. Dark Warrior's true colors
 -----------------------------
The Dark Warrior looks exactly the same as the Samurai; however this wasn't
supposed to be like this. After looking in the data of the cart, it turns out
to be that the Dark Warrior had a different color scheme similar (but not the
same) as the Ochi Warrior. For some reason the wrong color scheme was
implemented for the Dark Warrior although the real palette is still inside
ROM. Use the following PAR code (US version): 96BF1D01 to fix this.

 6. Frue Gades
 -------------
The Gades you fight on top of Shuman's Sealed Tower and Doom Island isn't the
most powerful version of Gades in the game. It turns out to be there is a
dummied out version of him, that is a lot stronger; perhaps equal or stronger
than Amon. To fight him Relnqshd has created a fixxxer patch for this which
you can download from his site.

 7. Nosferato fails to make Contact
 ----------------------------------
Nosferato tries to use Contact every now and then, however since he is an
undead he cannot regain HP that easily. This wasn't taken into account when he
was 'programmed' and therefore Contact will almost always miss, so he can't
regain any energy. To fix this problem if you like Relnqshd has created a
fixxxer patch for this which you can download from his site.
All of these are fixed in the Fixxxer DX patch. Counting each of these as different points, DX 11-EU 5. I'm pretty sure that Iron Knuckle would have said that they were fixed in the EU version if they were, so of course Fixxxer DX is gonna jump ahead.

Now for things not covered in Iron Knuckles's FAQ: both the EU and Fixxxer DX fix the Submarine Shrine and Ancient Cave Floor 99 bugs, making it DX 12-EU 6. Then of course we have the abomination that is the Capsule Monsters situation; the US version fudged it up horribly--a few strings of code were altered/missing (Probably where DKK got that "US version has chunks of missing code" thing from), making it so that Capsule Monsters ask for rare items a good percentage of the time, whereas they ask for common, storebought items most of the time in every other version--even the Japanese version! I'd say that constitutes for two points (DX 12-EU 8.) Finally, the equipment menu bug with overflowing strings was fixed in the DX and EU versions, making the final tally (DX 13-EU 9.)

Overall, yeah, if you're that obsessed with Capsule Monsters (Which is, in my opinion, the only real reason to not play the US version with Fixxxer DX and the Arty > Artea patch), by all means, play the EU version. I'm pretty sure though, that even in the US version, there was some common item that Capsule Monsters liked to eat.

Whew, that was exhausting! And I have an inkling that it's only another argument that'll be ripped to shreds by you guys. :isuck:

 :edit:
Ah yes, the Pico Forest/PIKO issue; I completely forgot about that. It's the same in both the DX and EU versions. Plus, the Fixxxer DX patch puts back in the bunny girls.

Actually, yes, Lufia 2 is just miles better than Lufia 1 that it is worth ignoring the others.
Without The Fortress of Doom, there'd be no Rise of the Sinistrals. But conversely, without Rise of the Sinistrals, there'd be no Fortress of Doom. That's because apparently, Rise of the Sinistrals was going to be made first, but the creators decided to make the sequel, The Fortress of Doom, first for some wacko reason. Time warp!

Or at least, that's what the story is on the Internet. Dunno if it's true or not--I didn't see any sources cited.

Not to mention Rise of the Sinistrals is so buggy that it's been dubbed "Bugfia II," whilst The Fortress of Doom has only two or three bugs that we know of.

Gaming Discussion / The State of the Lufia Series' Walkthroughs
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:48:39 AM »
So here I'm going to complain about the state of Lufia & the Fortress of Doom and Lufia: The Legend Returns walkthroughs. I'm not going to bother to mention Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, because that one's the good child and it's got so much more research put into it, and I'm also not going to cover Lufia: Ruins of Lore because I have yet to play that game and doubt I ever will; the art style in that game makes me want to kick puppies.

Anyway, let's get on with it.

I don't get it. I mean, I'm not even a ROM hacker and I know that there's bits missing from these damned things. I mean, sure, we've at least got the "Treasure Guide" for The Fortress of Doom, although it pretty much demands you to download/buy some sort of software so you can properly view it. I mean, hell, the author himself states that it's not meant to be seen in a .TXT file, hence why I'm forcing myself to clean it up now into a more readable order.

As for The Legend Returns, as I've said before: I know that the game has horrible grammar, but does that automatically make it OK for all the walkthroughs, FAQs, and guides pertaining to it look like they were written by people with third grade educations? For example, the only decent one I can find is loaded with emoticons. It also can't decide if Wain is called "Wain," "Wein," "Main," or "Hero." Alstadt is also apparently Astadt, Aldstadt, and Asdtat. Punctuation is so scattered, it's unbelievable. At least it's better than the last one I had--apparently, Wain was also Wine and Wayne, Dei was Deh, and Seena was Senna, Sina, Sheena, and Sheila. Is there some in-joke that The Legend Returns' walkthroughs must be poorly spelled to coincede with the game? I don't get it.

Then we have Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, where the walkthroughs are all nice and perfect, where 100% treasure collection is basically in every guide, where they even bother to list out miscellaneous details, like differing townspeople messages and battle formulae. Really, I just don't get it. Sure, Rise of the Sinistrals is probably the best game in the series, or it would be if not for its over 9000 bugs, but that's no reason to ignore the other two in the main Sinistrals trilogy, or hell, even the sidestory game!

Well, that's my rant for today. I should probably just start a blog or somethin', huh?

Oh, I forgot to mention--I'm cleaning up this "Jimeous" person's guide for The Legend Returns so it's a little more bearable. That's the "decent guide" I mentioned before. I'm only keeeping it for personal use, so I doubt he'll have any qualms about me doing this.

I wanna get a 2 GB, but my dad says they're too expensive. How much in actuality do they cost? Because like I said, my dad keeps saying he'll buy a replacement everytime he has to fiddle with my computer, but he never does. By the way, my dad also says that there's two of his acclaimed "memory sticks" in my computer. Seeing as how we've had it for a long time, I'm inclined to believe him, but is that possible?

Use the mighty power of "SHUT THE FUCK UP".

That's the only advice I have to give you. =\
To bad that just gets you slapped upside the head when you're a teeeager.

The best thing to do is to just enjoy what you have, and not what you don't have. My birthday is in 2 days and all I'm getting are more bills to pay, but whatever - I'm gonna use it as an excuse to bother friends for the day :P
I've heard that one before, many, many times. Thanks for trying, though.

I did a reformat not three months ago and my antispyware/antivirus don't pick up anything.

This computer initally came with, like, Windows 2000 and we got it upgraded to Windows XP. My dad says that some sort of memory stick thing inside it stopped working, too, so that might be the problem.

I'm just starting to think that this computer sucks like a $1,000 prostitute.

I really, really, really hate my computer.

 :edit:
I forgot to mention--my handheld stuff worked fine up until about two years ago. I'm guessing that's when the stick-thing ran out of juice.

Yes, a very happy birthday to me--my computer is about a year away from being bricked and my family can't decide what to do with my birthday party. All I wanted was 3 friends over and to eat some pizza and salad, and now there's just this huge shitstorm because my sisters are assholes. I swear, the world would be better off if I were dead.
