or you could duplicate The Sealed Door Fix's change using a map editor.  shouldn't take long, though it won't do anything to address gobs of bytes being altered.

ok, Novalia's added to the patch documentation to address this.  the patch itself is unchanged, indicating he's confident it works.

i can't think of any other patches in the Improvement Project that edit Maranda's interior map (nor Jidoor's, as previously stated).  if one interprets the Readme warning verbatim, simply modifying the ROM with a map editor is enough to possibly cause clashes, even if it's a different map you're editing.

weird.  often, map edits will result in larger patches than what he has (like thousands of bytes), because the maps use compression, and changing one tile (at least in a map editor) can wind up changing a whole string of ROM values once the new sequence of tiles is recompressed.  the fact that his patches are so small makes me think that Novalia Spirit manually edited the data, so it's possible that he misread some of the compression info.  or typoed. :P

if he had used a map editor, the chances would increase that a patch editing one area of Jidoor's interior map would conflict with a patch that edits another area of it.  however, i can't think of any other patches that alter this map.

it's worth double-checking "The Magic Bridge Fix" and South Figaro, though it's unlikely there's a problem, with that having been out 4.5 years.

Ravens.  since a game of this magnitude deserves a made-up score, 28-25.

if i pick Ravens, i'm guaranteed to "win" the playoffs on the board this year (we've all done mighty well), so that's the best strategic pick.  but i'll try not to be a wanker, and look at the game itself.

based on stat comparisons, i like the 49ers better.  but the Ravens have a better turf record (and have played there more games).  against common opponents, they both beat the Patriots, by a similar (average) margin, so the deciding team is the New York Giants, whom Baltimore beat and San Francisco got drubbed by.  they've both done well in the playoffs (obviously), but i was more impressed by the Ravens' last two opponents going into their games than i was the Forty Niners' -- enough to pick against Baltimore both times (the opposite of San Fran), and thus to be more impressed by their victories.  so they have the "momentum" edge if such a thing can exist.

in that vein, San Francisco's defense was more dominant during the regular season, but Baltimore's has struck me as more smothering during the playoffs, remembering that 14 of Denver's 35 points against them came from special teams, which is damn difficult for anybody to reproduce.

there's also the factor that i regularly pick against Baltimore in these threads, this year being no exception.  it's nothing personal; i just happen to think their playoff opponents are better, and am often proven wrong.  this year especially, i've eaten plenty of crow (or rather, crow's cousin has eaten me!).  so not wanting to get burnt thrice in a row would also incline me to pick the black birds.

but i still have 2 hours left, so a pick can wait. :P

Since we did the lark of Pro Bowl picking last year, might as well do it again.  I'll go with the NFC, as they had 39 inter-conference wins this year, versus a mere 25 for the AFC.

argh, i didn't catch any of the first game, as i was asleep.  seems like it was a good one.

saw the last ~1.75 quarters of the AFC game, and the Ravens were impressive.  three good drives on offense, and a smothering defense, including 2 batted passes by McPhee, 1 causing an interception.  i've heard that the counter to that move is for an offensive lineman to push the guy backwards as he's leaping up, thus causing him to fall on his arse.  not much the quarterback can do, unless he's willing to rule out throwing to certain parts of the field.  i suppose double pumps can work if done sparingly.

--------------------------

Playoffs, Conference championship round:

assassin = 1-1
Lenophis = 1-1
Deathlike2 = 1-1

---------------------

playoff results so far:

Deathlike2: 7-3
Lenophis: 7-3
assassin: 8-2

-------------------

and the final confrontation will be a match-up between brothers!  only one will see victory, and the other will have great shame or honorable death.  hey, the familial thing was reminding me of the plot to an Asian martial arts movie.  or maybe they'll both be fine regardless of outcome, and go out for pizza and ice cream together the Monday after.

was it wrong of me to be picking 49ers and Patriots by Sunday morning? :P  as usual, my official picks will wait, unless i'm incapacitated and unable to post in time, in which case these are it.

Patriots.  I saw some of the Bengals-Texans game, and what a snoozer.  The winner could only manage 19 points at home?  That's not gonna cut it against New England.  In contrast, I caught the last part of the AFC East winner's game against San Francisco, and that was exciting stuff.  Even though the Patriots lost, that was one hell of a comeback they mounted.

Falcons, though it's a tough call.  they had one EASY schedule.  their opponents' final win count average was a mere 6.75, versus 8.06 for the Seahawks.  still, they beat strong teams when they had to, going 4-0 against teams whose ultimate win count was 8-8 or better.  (Seattle went 6-1, arguably more impressive.)  Seattle does get the edge in common opponents faced.

i don't put a ton of stock in the Seahawks' road record of 3-5, with 4 of those losses coming in the first half of the season.  still, Atlanta's 7-1 home record cannot be ignored.

49ers.  The Packers finished strong, and they have more playoff success in recent years, but they seem a bit spotty this year, particularly on defense.  San Francisco has a superior defense, and a great home field record.  While their quarterback has no postseason experience, he hasn't given indication that the higher stakes will rattle him.

i'll start with the Broncos.  the others can wait, since i'm also unsure on the NFC games.
