Title: Pandora's Box sees the light of day once again
Post by: Lenophis on February 25, 2011, 10:06:58 PM
It's been a while since we've had any public discussion about this one, but now is not the time for talk. It's time for action. That's right, THE FF6 Hack gets a public demo, and one that is long overdue. What does this mean?

Some of the changes you may (or may not) find during this demo:

Going into further detail would be long, boring, and tl;dr. In the end, after four years of work to this date, we think many will be pleased. However, since this is the internet, and for some it's real life, we know that not everyone will be happy with some changes.

On behalf of the whole team, we thank everyone for their patience, their suggestions, and their feedback with this hack.

But enough talk, have at it (http://slickproductions.org/ff6patches.php)! Make sure you read the readme, because nobody can help you if you don't.

Well, I try to patch it with xdelta and I get the error "bad magic number: not a valid delta"

EDIT: I got it to patch with the second xdelta program listed in the readme, but the first xdelta program didn't patch.

I just started playing it, its great so far. Beautiful job.

Just noticed something in the menu; the icons overlap the newly increased character names:

And in the menu, the status icon "erases" one of the character letters...

Is this intentional? just wondering...

That's a side effect of longer character names and longer class names. It's entirely cosmetic, and something we'll address way way down the line.

Question 1: Does it matter which rom we have to patch? I'm pretty sure I use the 1.0
Question 2: Is there anything specific you want us to look out for?
Question 3: Is there any out of the blue brand new item secret locations in the middle of nowhere we'd never find without already knowing about it that we could easily miss? Cause I would hate that.
Question 4: How long into the story does the demo last? (I don't want to bust my ass on a 'you have to lose here regardless' boss thinking I'm supposed to win some how.)

If you bothered to read the readme, you would know that answer.

Question 2: Is there anything specific you want us to look out for?
Not particularly. Just have fun.

Question 3: Is there any out of the blue brand new item secret locations in the middle of nowhere we'd never find without already knowing about it that we could easily miss? Cause I would hate that.
Of course there are! :cycle: Nothing's crazy hidden, but you will miss them if you aren't careful.

Trust me, when it ends, you'll know.

Keep in mind, this is after I spent about five days playtesting it. I won't share my notes, though?that would be too embarrassing. :P

:edit:
You'll want to have as many healing items as you can, seriously. I'm not even kidding.

Yeah, I didn't read the readme yet. I downloaded quickly just in case it's taken down and ran off to the gym.

Ok guys, the patch has been updated. A crash bug was reported, and is now fixed.

And again, the patch has been updated. An error on my part, I caused an infinite loop.

There won't be some "you have to lose this battle because that's the end" situation. Well, actually, there may be such a case, but that's not the end of the demo. The demo will just sort of close out and tell you that it's over.

And when you run across what I mean by the above, you'll know it too. Just don't enter any optional battles without saving first. :)

Discovered the [Dusk] weapon. How nice and properly hidden. Good stuff.
The Sabin duel/Gilgamesh battle also wicked but I have a question about that; If you died and retained your levels and an early stat and could survive that Grand Trine and then kill Gilgamesh (presumably):: Does that mean you could keep the Gamma Sword?
(It also says somewhere bad things happen if you cheat. If you cheat, does something different happen?)

Pretty sure you don't retain your levels and experience when you die - after all, the description at the save point was changed to remove that tidbit.

Good to know. Chances are I'd use save-state load anyway. I hate losing progress!!!
What if you grind to very high levels off Leafers and such to the point you survive the ultimate attack? I'm mostly curious to see what would happen. I'm half suspect something might happen!

If you really want to do that, hacking your save file would be a much less time-consuming process - though I would only use it for the sole purpose of that one battle, and not to complete the game, as that would defeat the purpose of the hack

In the demo, probably nothing special would happen... in the final release, though, well, I'm not sure, but we have discussed it. :)

Let's just say that a little grinding is fine, but too much may actually hurt you in some respects, at least in the final release.

How far can you progress in the hack?  Kinda hard to get to the banquet when the screen gets garbled.

Hello starting to play through your hack and came across a Couple of issues I felt I should point out.

One is the Time Quest in Zozo. The text here gets broken and unable to put in any answers. Dunno if you fixed this or not.

Another Bug is that when Locke has the Plunder Ability and turned into an Imp he can only use items. Not sure if this is intentional or not but yeah...

Overall the game seems rather interesting, however a couple of things are starting to frustrate me not really "challenge" me if you get my meaning of the two.

One is the evasion rate of monsters seems to be overly high or the weapons hit rate seems far too low. This; over time, quickly escalates to annoying when 50% of your hits miss. While this is fine and dandy to try to avoid spamming Attack you have to keep in mind some characters ONLY rely on Attack. And to try and put the argument of eagle eye as a good reason to use said relic well unfortunately this brings me into my second issue....

Monsters seem to have attacks that can wipe out your party without foresight of relics and extreme time useage (sometimes not even this helps). One enemy group right now that's frustrating me to no end is the Magiteck Armors you fight in the Research Lab. I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about those yellow armors that seem to back attack more often than not (at least for me ha)

Anyway these monstrosities enjoy using Stasis (which puts every ally to sleep makes them invisible and i'm unsure what else I think slow and seizure i need to recheck) then these bastards have the audacity to berserk you or drop your HP down to Critical or my favorite a magimissile to the face.... Having said that that means we need peace rings and w/e else stops sleep. Which leaves us with the lesser two of invisible and slow....

While individually these skills aren't sooo soo terrible; combined together in a group of two enemies that seem to enjoy picking on you is infuriating and either I quickly kill them (which is impossible due to magic being a bit weaker and might i add slower to even learn...) and me not being the "running is a tactic" kinda guy it just pisses me off to deal with these guys by luck alone. Are you trying to encourage me to grind or something? (Again not a fan if this is what you're going for)

So even with proper relics equipped we run into the bigger problem of accuracy so I can't even hit my target... (sure maybe these guys don't have overly obscene evasion but that doesn't really help me against the other half of monsters I encounter in the area...)

Keep in mind my mindset in any game is that I should never have to grind. I should never absolutely need everything in a shop, and I should never have issues where I run into an enemy with no workaround solution (outside my first two gripes).

Is it ok for a character to die? Sure.
Is it ok for status effects for once to be employed by an enemy to run me down? Absolutely.
Is it ok for the enemy to have access to spells that multi-hit status effects on every character while on top of that shredding what little HP i have; as it is, to tissue, than maul me with an ability that can OHKO the weaker allies in your group anyway? No.... no please no, and keep in mind this isn't even a boss just a random encounter. I hate dealing with luck to get past a dungeon. *sighs and attempts again*

Ending my vent :P but I had to say something to someone out there. If you think you can give me some general RPG tips that might help me with this kinda grievance enlighten me. I'm curious as to what you might bring up.

My guess that this has to do with Imp status disabling commands and assuming that you're not given the Fight command, that would make sense.

Hello and welcome Cyrus Knight!

First of all, I want to say that we appreciate the feedback. While we do intend certain areas to have a feel of being "hard" or "easy" relative to the overall likely experience level, we don't intend it to be such a stark jump that it boils down to relying on luck (note that super bosses may rely on luck, however).  We are discussing ways of making accuracy a bit better without it getting to the point of all hits are guaranteed (like in the original). And as for the specific monsters in the Magitek Research Facility, we'll take a look to see if they are too much in terms of stats or AI.

Secondly, thanks for pointing out some of our bugs. I'm sure there are several more, but reports like this help us to hone in on them better.

Finally, about grinding: we're trying to encourage maybe a little grinding (well, actually, just play through and don't run, and you'll hit the target we want you to). We have procedures in place to punish you for too much grind as well as too little, so it's sort of a "keep it between the lines" situation. It sounds like you're playing through in a way that will keep it on par for the rest of the demo, so this is probably a balance issue on our part.  Again, a sharp jump in difficulty to the point of luck is not what we're going for, so we may need to nerf those enemies a bit or beef up your options. One issue we anticipate is having trouble with certain parties due to the imbalance among the characters, and that could be playing a role, but it should not be a prohibitively high challenge. I think some AI adjustments could fix that, though.

Thanks for replying and hellos all around!

Sorry I came off as a bit eccentric in the end there haha I finally did get through the area but yeah it took save state loading (something I consider cheating personally :( ) but I'm glad you're working on balancing it and it wasn't 100% intentional to be that luck based. I agree that in the end of the game having bosses in particular have some crazy stuff going on like these guys would be fine. By that point in the game you have way more options at your disposal too. I chose a party that I'd consider fairly common which was Locke and Celes (no brainer lol) and Cyan (I like Bushido now that it's not ages slow) and Sabin (He seems weaker now but more interesting in general). The hit and miss issue is still there making all of his blitz abilities far less useful and he seems to learn his skills way slower to which I hope that means his later skills got way better or even brand new! (Dare I dream!?)

I'll keep you guys posted on difficulty/luck based quirks I might find but more than likely unless a specific group of monsters comes in and blasts my party to 0 like these two guys the only thing I can say is the accuracy is gonna continue to mess with me heh. On another note I am glad you took into consideration the armor of the enemies in the magiteck research lab. I had a horrible feeling you'd forget that most characters don't do magic damage at all (again poor locke) but very glad you adjusted em down to a more bearable level.

In regards to the grinding thing that's awesome that's actually how I personally play. I never run from a fight and that's pretty much how I make enough money without becoming OMG WHY ARE YOU LEVEL 30 ALREADY!!! Yeah... The magiteck research lab should be right around 15~20 in the original game if I recall correctly. My current team is around level 18 or so cause I grinded exploring the southern continent a bit to see if you changed any more scenery :P and test my party a bit more.

The last thing I should say is that money grinding is a bit of a chore as well. I'm kinda on the fence about it cause it makes picking and choosing equipment a bit more... specific I guess is the right word here lol. The only thing I'd say is increase gold earned by maybe an extra 20% all around (except from monsters like the Nut Eater that give a lot of gold anyway) to balance this issue a bit better but meh if you do that it might unbalance your other intentions such as specific equipment just being a decoy (Golden Armor comes to mind here... 20k are you nuts!? I bought this armor with a save and yeah I find the cost sooo not worth it heh)

 :edit:
Oh before I forget. A couple other bugs I found was that the Spider's Silk can be equipped like a Relic. There might be other similar items that are like this too like the Vampire Fang I didn't think to look and it's late so I'll check it later. Happy hunting!

The Bird Fights in the mountain area that you recruit Sabin. Their ability to cast Stone Beak is a bit of a nuisance and I forgot to check if a Jewel Ring could be bought in South Figaro (if it can ignore this if it's not there then I'd consider slowing the birds down or this relic be obtainable in some way)

In the same area the double brawler type fight is also a bit of a nuisance in the sense that their evade is way too high and their damage is also obscene. It could be fine to keep those stats the same while dropping their HP down a bit (makes them look like shadow heh)

Speaking of Shadow I'd also consider letting him equip the Thief Glove unless you want to make Locke more unique in that respect.

I would've thought that the prices in Jidoor would've said clearly "don't buy anything here." :hmm:

That's kinda the impression I got with the whole golden set actually lol it felt like a decoy so I bought it after saving to be sure and I'm glad I did :) With that being said gold earned isn't really so terrible then. As for the Spiders Silk that's interesting it did no changes to stats and I wasn't sure what it did as a Relic ...

Does it do anything as a relic? It's described as a battle-item use.

If I'm overstepping anything please let me know!

Equipping the Spider's Silk only seems to cause perma slow on the wearer. I haven't seen anything beyond that.

I assume you're supposed to use it as an item in battle (like the Rods and Shields). When it's applied as a relic, it works in the reverse of the whatever would be the Running/Hermes Shoes (giving you Haste/Slow immunity).

Did you bundle with some form of Hermes Shoes to counteract that? I forget if JCE's hack did that nicely...
Title: Re: Pandora's Box sees the light of day once again
Post by: Cyrus Knight on March 09, 2011, 06:49:12 PM
I found that out the other night when I was looking at the item in the Relic menu. I'm like no way does this only cause slow on your character. I go into the item menu and take a peek at the extra info and sure enough it teaches you Slow. I assume the Vampire Fang does the same thing but with Drain. Nice oddities heh.

So I saved past the magitech facility before I get thrown into that cart and race for my life, and I'm already getting frustrated again (I know wah right?) anyway the enemies seem to have skills that are now hitting consistently for 300 damage and the enemies are coming in large groups as well. Since most of your spells and abilities are single target this is becoming a rather huge nuisance. My poor locke with 280 HP is getting One shot and it doesn't take long for Sabin or Cyan to follow suit. I'll just have to put everyone in the backrow for now i guess and keep trying but I do feel the monster numbers are too high for so little skills that can multi-hit then again it's my fault for not bringing Edgar (lol).

The monster also that replaced the No ??? (I forget the number of him) was also interesting but I felt a bit more than simple annoyance. Basically I had to force my players to standby and let Celes runic everything I could until its MP fell out so I could actually attack it. The Damage my characters did (minus Zen which btw seems a little Overpowered in comparison to everyone's abilities at this point) was doing too little and the counter attack was rather brutal. While the battle is certainly workable it's a shame it has to boil down to a waiting game. I can't say the battle was terrible or good cause it at least kept my interest but I can say the battle was very long and loved that Celes had her moment to shine before her own scene. Haven't really gotten through the minecart yet but I'm sure I'll have more to say about it when I finally get through it.

Cheers

Also, I swear that Blitz command execution runs on a much longer delay than I remember... regardless of a correct blitz input.

 :edit:
In the uncontrollable Cyan battles, he operates as if he had the Black Belt relic (counterattack after taking a physical hit), but it doesn't appear that he any form of it equipped. Did I miss something here?

 :edit:
Apparently I cannot get "Flawless Victory" if I heal in battle before killing all the monsters (Banon's Health). Also, I can't get it if Interceptor blocks an attack. Mind you, all party members proceed to laugh as usual (since they have not taken any damage).

There's some sort of delay after the battle is won... for the EXP message. I remember the last message (GP) would have a delay before you'd exit out of the battle.

 :edit:
Usage of Steal and taking 0 damage (from the StillGoing monsters) doesn't invoke the flawless victory code.
Title: Re: Pandora's Box sees the light of day once again
Post by: Imzogelmo on March 18, 2011, 06:00:52 PM
Just a note about Flawless Victories:

Your character is supposed to laugh if no damage was taken in the battle... getting healed counts as damage, BTW.
You get flawless victories if ALL characters are neither hit nor take damage... and don't run away, of course. So, taking a zero damage will cause you to laugh, but still keep you from a FV. It's possible for everyone to laugh and you still don't get the FV.

That behavior is intentional.

Stealing from the enemy does not fall into that category. The dog is less of an issue (the dog taking damage despite it being like invincible is fine by me).

2 Potions and an Ether. The Thunder Rod was axed in favor or something less convenient. :P

Woah. That's left over from when we were testing something, and forgot to change it back.

At least HiPotions would be nice.... not that I'll need them personally.

At least decrease the delay a little bit... it's too noticeable and it ends up being stacked at the end of everything like the normal (original) Swordtech session with Cyan.

Speaking of Cyan... it almost feels like he has the most accurate weapons (and I'm not using your equivalent of the Sniper Sight). I've seen the Quadra Slam (#4 Swordtech) be inaccurate in other hacks... I almost thought you would have altered the accuracy as well... go figure.

Some of the messages are tied to your text speed. I forget which ones.

It annoys me for the EXP message and I use the standard speed of 3. I'm used to the GP message....

Major bug: There are three places that you can "talk" to give you the info on how to stop the train via the controls. The top left area, and the bottom left two spots are the locations. When searching/talking to the bottom two, you cannot move out of that area.... you can search the thing again or goto the menu... but that's it.

 :edit:
The Gauntlet effect on the Katanas does not seem to give any extra damage increase/bonus to Bushido-STR based attacks...

Late Edit: They should give a bonus... what's the point of giving it the effect other than to only give a mediocre/subpar boost for regular attacks?

 :edit:
50% over base value for merchants is annoying (especially when you realize attempting to sell the item only is "a third" of the item shop's pricing on crack).

"Strangle" is how I feel about the Red Sahagins... I want to repeat the attack on the evildoer responsible.

Terrible idea: "No description available" in the Rage area. Don't do it for less that interesting monsters... because when I find that their attacks suck ass, it's not worth hiding it. Also, hiding a healing spell rage in the most rare slot... might as well forget it existed (it equates to being irrelevant)! Also, the M-tek special listing is not really that accurate. The Rage makes Gau use that kick attack, but it's listed as "Attack", which doesn't really remotely sound accurate.

Obligatory pictures of fail:

I'm sure you've fixed it, but just a reminder:

It's less emu fail, but more like it's hitting the counter code (good idea to shorten it a tad).

Also, I've reaffirmed that the Steal causes no flawless victory bug. I had it happen again under a different circumstance. If you steal from a monster that has nothing left, Flawless Victory is impossible. A quick test would probably involve stealing from a monster that has limited items to steal...

Is it just me, or is there a line or two missing in the Opera (Draco and the Prince are going to duel or something)?

Also, I cannot quite explain why the HeavyArmor attacks itself... it seems that is its response to poison damage. Must be some crazy itch...

BTW, I'm slowly plotting against that psuedo-boss monster you added.

 :edit:
I forget if the Blood Sword does it as well, but the Rune Blade uses the sword block animation despite not providing any evasion (like the original weapon did). I'm sure other weapons that you gave evasion to didn't get a block animation, but at the very least remove animations from weapons that don't provide evasion.

 :edit:
The Dark Blade bought @ Vector gets its name changed in the item list somehow. Its name gets changed with L/R scrolling or location... I presume there's some sort of bad/special char involved for making that happen.

Blood Spear does not use Drain attribute (unless it's only the attached spell?)
Rentering the Magitek Factory during the escape (and possibly after it) will cause you to stay stuck in the area... permanently.

A similar thing happens to Project128's drain attack name (the a in Sap disappears) but I couldn't get a screenshot of it.

You can still buy stuff at the Weapon and Armor shops (not the Relic shop fortunately)... with the Armor Shop being a total mess (this is first airship run, before the normal Thalmasa event).

Level based spells work opposite (L4 Flare fails to work on L20 players, but works on level 19 or level 21 for instance).
The hidden remedd item in the Cave to the Sealed Gate is still a Golden Needle (message needs to be updated, this includes the gold message).
